A New Paradigm: Biodiversity as the Foundation of Agriculture

At the end of July, Bioversity International and 16 other leading organizations in agriculture, development, and conservation launched a global partnership to strengthen the connections between biodiversity and agricultural production and to shape the impending Sustainable Development Goals. The initiative builds on Bioversity’s focus on agricultural biodiversity – the diversity of varieties and species of plants on farms and managed landscapes  – which is seen as a means for farmers to manage risks, such as threats from pests and diseases, climate changes, and market variability, while also protecting important crop genes and traits for current and future food security, evolution, and adaptation. As the Landscapes Blog moves from its recent focus on sustainable intensification to climate-smart agricultural landscapes, crop genetic resources and agricultural biodiversity are important elements of both these topics.
