Advancing Agriculture Research for Development at GCARD2

On the heels of the Committee on World Food Security’s 39th meeting, food security experts (and many others) will head to the second Global Conference on Agricultural Research for Development (GCARD), held in Uruguay, this week. Building off of the first conference in 2010, this year’s meeting will focus on implementation, planning joint actions, and stakeholder cooperation laid out in the GCARD Roadmap. The conference program hones in on research efforts that advance development needs and objectives, moving  from the ‘why’ of 2010 to the ‘how.’

Three key themes form the backbone of the conference:

  • Foresight for impact – matching research priorities to future development needs, and establishing collective actions for improved foresight and research planning at global, regional, and national levels.
  • Partnerships for impact – presenting the lessons, gaps, and barriers from experiences in collaborative efforts so far.
  • Capacity development for impact – identifying the specific collective actions required to address major capacity needs.

Plenary and parallel thematic sessions will serve to guide planning around achieving impacts and setting benchmarks for future actions. A breakout session on Tuesday on Partnerships for Environmental Resilience will highlight how new research-development partnerships and concerted regional actions enhance resilience, mitigate climate change, and promote sustainable use of natural resources at local and landscape scales. Specific presentations and panel discussions will focus on sustainable use of biodiversity; land, water, forests, and landscapes; and climate change.
